We ask our children what they want to be when they grow up.
Which is fundamentally the wrong question
The question we should be asking is,
Who do you want to be?
People are always trying to figure out what to do with their lives.
But this is a slightly misguided ambition
Because what’s more important than your vocation, is your character.
Who you are as a person.
How you choose to act in the world
How you choose to deal with adversity.
How you manage and nurture relationships
How you establish and reinforce your boundaries.
How you prioritize and make decisions.
How you navigate the broader moral landscape.
And ultimately how you keep yourself grounded and connected with that’s fundamentally important.
These are more pertinent ambitions, not only for us to adopt, but also for us to instill in our children.
